PCPCRC member Dr. Vickie Baracos appointed Member of the Order of Canada

Longtime member of the PCPCRC Dr. Vickie Baracos has been appointed Member of the Order of Canada. Alberta Cancer Foundation Chair in Palliative Care and Professor at the University of Alberta, Dr. Baracos has “transformed our understanding of cachexia, a debilitating syndrome that causes rapid weight and muscle loss in patients with advanced-stage cancer, leaving them with a skin-and-bones appearance. she developed groundbreaking insights into the fundamental biology of this complex condition. Her work has since led to clinical classification and diagnosis, and has paved the way for treatment and improved patient outcomes.”

One of Canada’s highest honours, the Order of Canada celebrates outstanding achievements and extraordinary contributions.
